New Quad Bikes Regulations 2023

Quad Bikes Regulations

As of 20 November 2023, new regulations aimed at reducing the frequency of quad bike accidents have been introduced. These new legal requirements will take effect under the Safety, Health, and Welfare at Work Regulations.

The new regulations mandate the following.

  • Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE): It is now compulsory for all quad bike operators to wear a helmet. All helmets should have a chinstrap and be capable of being used with suitable eye protection. All quad bike helmets should fit comfortably and securely, to ensure full protection. Standard industrial hard hats, forestry helmets ad cyclist helmets are not acceptable for operating a quad.
  • Education is key: Operators of quad bikes must have successfully completed a quad bike training course provided by a registered training provider to a QQI standard or equivalent. The purpose of the course is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill, and competence to drive and handle an ATV in a safe manner and in compliance with relevant legislation. One such course is linked below.

Regular maintenance and checks of quad bikes are vital for ensuring safe operation. Routine inspection of tire pressures and adherence to the manufacturer’s servicing guidelines are crucial. A poorly maintained quad bike can easily lead to an accident.
